Regency Traditions for the New Year

We always look forward to the beginning of a new year, and we celebrate with traditions to start that year off well. During the Regency, one such tradition was “creaming the well.” Ladies hoped to be the first to draw water from a well in the new year, and believed it would bring them luck in marriage. All the better if they were able to get the object of their affection to drink that water before the end of New Year’s Day!

Christmas Carols

Christmas caroling was a common holiday pastime during the Regency. Many of the songs we still sing today were sung then. What is your favorite holiday song?

18th Century Smugglers

In the 18th century, more and more items became taxed, which led to smugglers bringing in tax free goods, such as spirits, lace, and tea.
