Pearl Hewitt on the Emerald City Writers' Conference

Last weekend was the Emerald City Writers Conference and Passport to Romance Reader Appreciation Event. Audiobook narrator Pearl Hewitt shares a few highlights.

I had the opportunity to meet many readers and some very enthusiastic audiobook listeners at the Passport to Romance Reader Appreciation Event. It was a very successful evening of laughter, chatter and giveaways. Everyone seemed to have a great time.

PicMonkey CollageThe presentation on how to Successfully Create an Audiobook went very well although it was a little rushed toward the end because the volume of information is large and many questions were asked by interested authors who seriously want to move into the audiobook minefield. I was happy to help get the word out and encouraged authors to branch out into the audiobook world and take advantage of this extra income source.

Thanks, Pearl, for sharing your experience with my readers!

5 reasons I love autumn in Seattle

Welcome, autumn! I hope you’re enjoying the change of season. I certainly am. There are many reasons so many people love this time of year, but I’m listing my top 5.

1. It’s the perfect time for a staycation. September through November is the best time to visit Seattle, according to U.S. News & World Report. The tourists crowds have thinned and temperatures have cooled, making it easier to visit popular destinations and landmarks.

2. Snoqualmie Falls! Located 29 miles from downtown Seattle, this scenic attraction is located in a two-acre park, which includes a gift shop and observation deck. It’s the perfect backdrop for autumn’s spectacular foliage. dscn52143.  Apple picking. For many people, a trip to the local apple orchard to pick apples and then snack on hot cider and donuts is an annual tradition. The mild autumn weather makes a visit to the orchard especially pleasurable, and the multitude of local orchards makes for a great afternoon outing with family and friends. Check out these easy recipes for applesauce, apple crisp and apple butter before you bring home a bushel.

4. Yurt camping. Outdoor enthusiasts love autumn, but let’s be honest. Sometimes the Pacific Northwest weather can be drizzly and damp. Camping in a yurt means you don’t have to cancel your plans if the weather isn’t cooperating.

Cover Reveal: Marriage Under Fire

Deciding on cover art is a nerve-wracking process for authors. How do you capture 80K, 50K or even 20K words in a single image? Will the image engage readers’ attention? Will it inspire them to pick up the book or click through on Amazon for more information?

According to The Book Designer, fiction book covers have a variety of goals, including:

  • Convey genre (i.e. historical, contemporary, suspense)
  • Establish tone (i.e. gritty, flirty, humorous)
  • Generate excitement

Kim Killion of The Killion Group designs the cover for both of my romantic suspense series, The Code Breakers and Grayce Walters. I had the opportunity to meet Harvey Stables, one of Kim’s most popular cover models at a local conference.

Picture with Harvey Gaudan StablesThat clinch, delightful as it was, isn’t cover worthy, but Harvey and Kim still managed to get the job done when I needed a cover for MARRIAGE UNDER FIRE.
